Over the past several months we have been quietly and powerfully INTENDING that the perfect Chiropractor join our staff. We even knew it "wanted" to be a male, to create more balance in our awesome staff, as we only had (the very talented) Jason Latona to "anchor" that position so far. Lo and behold, enter Dr. Barry Weinberg, D.C. extraordinaire! Dr. Weinberg not only practices Wellness Chiropractic, he has also published several books on healing, is a great teacher/lecturer, and rounds out the Point Pleasant "family" beyond our wildest dreams.
We want you to come and meet him, attend his Thursday Night Lecture series, (free, so RSVP to reserve your seat!)and benefit from his pure commitment to help you be "Happier, Healthier, more Harmonious"..."one life at a time."

Swine Flu Prevention
I have had an intense amount of questions surrounding the swine flu, and what can be done naturally to prevent it. Fortunately, I have answers! There is a homeopathic flu remedy called Oscillococcinum that has bee around for decades, quietly doing the job. It is readily available at health food stores, and even some local pharmacies.
This remedy is fabulous, because it tastes great and can be used by all age groups.
To help prevent an onset of ANY flu, take 1/2 vial under the tongue at night for 3 nights in a row. As with all homeopathics, do not use mint toothpaste before or after taking the remedy. You can switch to baking soda for a few nights.
If you feel you might be coming down with a flu, take a full vial up to 3 times per day for at least 3 days. You also might consider supplementing with Echinacea, which stimulates the immune system. As with all natural products, take the Echinacea frequently throughout the day and evening, up to 6 times. Continue for at least 5 days. Additional helpers are Vitamin C (use Esther-C), zinc and vitamin D3. To your health!

Gluten-free Cooking Class Fun & Delicious
Last Saturday we had some serious fun in our kitchen, as Nikki Costello, Anthony Aliberti (our guest instructor) and I held the 2nd Gluten-free Cooking (and Eating!) Class. The theme was Caribbean Food, and the coconut/mango salad that Nikki introduced was a major hit, as was the chilled salmon with salsa and Anthony's family recipe of a vegetable goulash. Nikki's black bean soup was a perfect match to start the meal with and to finish it off, we made Bananas Foster (yes, we lit our food on fire!) with rum. The kitchen was filled with excited happy people when we polished off the dessert. By the way, the next class's theme is Mexican Food...gluten and dairy free, of course!

Wellness Club
Our Wellness Club members have been busy taking advantage of the beautiful South Florida weather. The members of the walking team have been doing their weekly walks around the Sunrise Beach area, and a few of the cyclists have been riding up along A1A.
Several of our cycling members are currently riding in the MS 150 “Breakaway to the Keys” this May 2-3 2009. (See Events and Activities page to find out when they ride.) If you can’t join us, perhaps you’d like to support them or the team on their quest to raise awareness of MS.

"Zap & Hide" from Jane Iredale for Acne and Ingrown Hairs

Available in February at Point Pleasant Wellness, a holistic day spa in Ft Lauderdale, will be a new acne product from Jane Iredale Mineral Cosmetics (a dual ended product design that is similar to the "Sugar & Butter" lip exfoliator and hydrator). The treatment side contains the new acne-fighting peptide called Tego Policosanol which reduces excess sebum secretion without drying the skin. It also inhibits the growth of microorganisms while tea tree leaf oil adds antiseptic qualities. On the camouflage side there are blemish-fighting properties with mineral pigment for coverage.
If you have an active blemish or pimple, you can use the treatment side morning and night to help fight the bacteria and to minimize the size of the blemish.
It is also a great product for men who have problems with ingrown hairs. Applying the "Zap" to the ingrown will help heal and fight the bacteria. Then use "Hide" to cover or cancel out the redness.

Kinesio® Tape: What is that Stuff?
Kinesio® Tape: What is that Stuff?

While attending the 2006 FSMTA convention, I took the Introduction to Kinesio® Taping course. It was a workshop aimed at introducing the foundations and basic principles behind the Kinesio® Tape, created by a Japanese chiropractor by the name of Dr. Kenzo Kase over 25 years ago in Japan. This tape he developed was first used in clinical rehabilitation settings as a “prescription” for his patients that were specifically designed to re-educate the neuromuscular system. Eventually, it began to be used by every professional sport in Japan. Kinesio® Tape was officially introduced in the United States in 1995, and was quickly used by professional teams throughout the US and even Europe. It is used in over 75% of the MLB teams, and over 50% of the NFL teams. It has even been used by Lance Armstrong and the United States Postal Service Cycling Team at the Tour de France!
It was discussed that the Kinesio® Tape when used in conjunction with massage therapy, whether it is a Swedish massage or sports massage, greatly increased the massage therapy benefits, well after the massage session ended. During one of the breaks, I asked the instructor about how the tape could help the ache in my shoulder. I was worried since I was going to be competing at the Fencing Summer National the following week, and was suffering from some rotator cuff irritation from training. The instructor taped me that afternoon (Friday), and the dull ache in my shoulder was all but gone. I competed the following Tuesday and again on Thursday with no pain. And the tape stayed on the whole time until I took it off on the following Friday. For one full week the Kinesio® Tape stayed on, supporting my shoulder. I was convinced!
Kinesio® Tape has received a lot of publicity this past year, thanks in large part to Keri Walsh at the 2008 Summer Olympics. She had the Kinesio® Tape all over her shoulder. All of a sudden, people were talking and asking questions about that “black tape.” I have incorporated the Kinesio® Tape into my Sports Massage practice with favorable results. I look forward to “taping” all of you!

The first time I noticed Kinesio® Tape was during the 2004 Summer Olympics, when I noticed Japan’s Men’s Gymnastics team had this tape all over their bodies. I was familiar with traditional athletic taping techniques which usually immobilizes the area covered. This tape however covered the arms, shoulders, and even the legs, and most importantly, did not restrict movement. The following year, while attending the Florida State Massage Therapy Association’ Annual Convention, I noticed several therapists walking around with this same tape on various parts of their bodies. So I enquired as to what that stuff was, and the answer… was Kinesio® Tape!

The New Era of Medicine
Just finished reading an article about Dr. Larry Dossey's work regarding Mind/Body Medicine, which was introduced to the public via his book, Recovering the Soul. A historical review was made that I thought everyone would find interesting. It describes the progress of Medicine through the second half of the 19th century.
Era 1 - Mechanical Medicine -- reflects the prevailing view that health and illnesses are totally physical in nature, and thus all therapies should be physical: surgical procedures, drugs, , etc. In this era the mind, or consciousness is equated with the functioning of the brain.
Era 2 - After World War II physicians and scientists began to realize that illness has a "pyschosomatic" aspect: emotions and feelings can influence the body's functions. Psychological stress, for instance, can contribute to high blood pressure, heart attacks and ulcers. This is a major advancement in Medicine.
Era 3 - Consciousness is not confined to our own mind, in fact, mind is unlimited and connected to all life. For instance, an individuals' mind might not just affect his/her body, but also the body of another person, even at a long distance, even when that other person is unaware of the effort. What an exciting time to be alive! Definitely food for thought. Jessie Keener, Nutritionist
